I was dragged to a yoga class. Literally 2 seconds after this picture I dropped to the ground & started kicking & screaming. (Playin… kinda-sorta)
Why? Because I suck at yoga!
Yoga, like anything, sucks when you first start. And then it becomes better, once you get decent at it.
The question then becomes: how do you get over sucking at something you’re trying to learn, so you can get good at it?
The answer is to become curious about the suck. “Embrace the suck” — open your arms & welcome sucking at something, find curiosity about it, move closer to this feeling of sucking – you’ll learn a lot!
Here’s what you might try:
Notice when you feel frustrated with sucking. It’s difficult, confusing, full of failure, feel like crying, out of your comfort zone & you want to go back into it (recollecting my experience lol).
Now instead of kicking like a baby to avoid this feeling of frustration, try sitting with it (or downward dogging with it). Just be there with it. Let it be in you, give it space.
Become curious about this feeling: what’s it like? Where is it located in your body? Don’t judge it, try to learn about it instead of thinking you already know. Be open to whatever it feels like.
Watch this feeling, over & over, & get to know it. There is a lot to learn in this process and you’ll suck at it too. That’s OK!
It’s only when we can be OK with the suck, & stay with it, that we can make any progress. Eventually we’ll get good at whatever we suck at, & we’ll love being good at it.
Then (this is the secret) youll realize that being good at this thing is just another comfort zone. Youll want to push out of that when you get there & find a new way to suck. But we can worry about that later. I still have lots of sucking left to do in Yoga! #Namaste
