“Drink your tea slowly & reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves – slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. Live the actual moment.” -Thich Nhat Hanh
In our rush to get through the “busy work” of each day we often forget to, “drink our tea slowly & reverently.” I’ll admit, I’m the biggest culprit of rushing. I’m usually chugging my tea, spilling half it down my shirt, tripping over my dog Brodie trying to get out the door because I’m late. We rush. We rush to get to the end of the work day, end of the week, end of the year. We search for happiness in the future.
But if it’s not here right now, when will happiness come?
Maybe we think it’ll come when we improve our lives, meet our goals, become a business success, or finish a degree. Maybe it’ll come when we go on that next trip to Aruba, or when we find time to relax during the Patriots game this weekend.
Or we could try this:
•Slow down instead of rushing.
•Pause, savor, & really notice everything about the current moment.
•Find small things to appreciate right here, right now.
•Don’t sweat the small stuff because its all small.
•Allow things to just be, without fighting them & without pushing them away. They’re not worth ruining this moment.
Let the beauty of this moment wash over you like a warm wave from the ocean in this picture (I promise its not too cold, yet!)
These are all things we already know. Yet here I am rushing through the day spilling tea on myself because it’s challenging to be present. The key here is practice. So for the last couple of months that’s what I’ve been doing.
Today we took a quick break, parked alongside the beach, drank a cup of warm Herbalife Tea, soaked up some sun, & had a remix by Thomas Jack – ‘Snowship’ on repeat.
If you don’t practice being present, slowing down, enjoying the moment right now, when will you practice? What are you practicing now instead?
What makes you happy? Start your practice now, live the actual moment, & drink your tea slowly.
Cheers!
