Live Your Purpose

We spoke about living a life of purpose. We thought about what’s important in life, how we want to live, & how we want to be remembered.

We asked the question, “Why does this matter?” Let’s consider the life most of us lead: we get up, work, eat, relax if we’re lucky & repeat until we’re old. What happens then? We look back on our lives, & perhaps wish we did things differently or accomplished something worthwhile. But after a certain point, it’s a bit too late.

So what can we do to live differently before its too late?

The best tool I’ve found is a principle by Stephen Covey & he says: begin with the end in mind. Imagine what we’d like people to say about us at our funeral. However we want to be remembered, that’s how we should live our lives, every day. I decided to give it a shot, here’s what I’m practicing:

1) Your purpose
Take 10 minutes, be still, & ask yourself: “How do I want to be remembered? What do I want people to say about me at my funeral? Then put your purpose on paper. This is your life mission. Post it somewhere visible. Be reminded of it every day.

2) Morning ritual
Every morning look at your purpose & ask yourself: what can I do today to help fulfill my purpose? Write that on your to-do list — even if it’s something simple.

3) Align your actions
Throughout the day, ask yourself: “How is what i’m doing getting me to where I want to be?” Make your actions move you toward your purpose. After awhile, it’ll become a part of your nature.

4) Evening ritual
Take a few minutes before bed & reflect on your day. Look at your purpose again, & think about how you could have lived today differently. Then figure out how you can live it better tomorrow.

My Mission:
•He’ll be an amazing dad (no rush)
•He’ll make his wife happy (no rush)
•He was a good, compassionate person
•He made the lives of others better (esp. those in need)
•He was a great speaker
•He was happy

What’s your mission?
